Just add water

We all know that severe dehydration can be life threatening, but did you know that even mild dehydration – as little as a 1–2% reduction of body mass due to water loss – can affect cognitive performance?

Studies have shown that dehydration can lead to decreased concentration, short-term memory deficits, impaired mood, and increased perception of task difficulty. In a work environment, these effects can translate to reduced productivity, slower response times, and increased errors.

Water is crucial for numerous bodily functions, including temperature regulation, nutrient transport, and waste removal. In the brain, water is vital for maintaining the balance of neurotransmitters, enabling electrical signalling between neurons, and supporting the structural integrity of brain cells. Dehydration can disrupt these processes, leading to a range of cognitive impairments.

The Impact of Hydration on Cognitive Performance

Research has consistently demonstrated the link between hydration and cognitive performance. In 2011, research from Lawrence Armstrong’s research group found that mild dehydration of just 1.59% body mass degraded various aspects of cognitive performance and increased anxiety in a group of young men. And, in 2012, further work from Armstrong’s lab reported that mild dehydration – 1.36% body mass – resulted in degraded mood, increased perception of task difficulty and lower concentration in a group of young women.

Hydration also plays a critical role in maintaining energy levels. Dehydration can lead to feelings of fatigue and lethargy, making it challenging to stay focused and productive throughout the day. Proper hydration helps maintain blood volume and circulation, ensuring that the brain receives adequate oxygen and nutrients to function optimally.

The 8x8 Rule

In the realm of health advice, few guidelines have been as pervasive and universally accepted as the 8x8 rule. This simple directive, which suggests drinking eight 8-ounce glasses – just under 2 litres – of water daily, has shaped our understanding of hydration for decades.

The rule is often traced back to a 1945 recommendation by the Food and Nutrition Board of the United States National Research Council, which stated that a suitable allowance of water for adults is one millilitre of liquid for every recommended calorie of food, i.e. two litres for the average 2,000-calorie diet recommended for women and two-and-a-half litres for the average 2,500-calorie diet recommended for men. Importantly, this  recommendation included all forms of fluid intake, encompassing not just water but also other beverages and water found in food. Over time, this nuanced advice was distilled into the overly simplistic 8x8 rule, which ignores the contribution of other fluids and foods to our daily hydration needs.

Scientific Insights into Hydration Needs

Modern research underscores that individual hydration requirements are highly variable and influenced by a multitude of factors, including age, sex, body size, physical activity level, and environmental conditions. The body's need for water can vary significantly from person to person and from day to day. For example, someone engaging in intense physical activity or living in a hot climate will have higher water needs than someone who is sedentary or in a cooler environment.

Under normal circumstances, thirst is initiated when the brain detects that the body is becoming dehydrated, providing the motivation to drink. In a sense, thirst is a bit behind the curve in that it is stimulated only when we start to become dehydrated. But any suggestion that thirst is a poor regulator of hydration is incorrect and unhelpful. If you are thirsty, drink!

Health Benefits of Good Hydration

So, does drinking more water improve health or aid in weight loss? Evidence suggests limited benefits from consuming more water than the body signals for, beyond preventing dehydration. However, research does highlight the importance of avoiding even mild dehydration. Studies indicate that adequate hydration supports brain function, whilst a 2023 study from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute found that proper hydration can slow ageing and reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart and lung disease.

In terms of weight management, fluid intake can be beneficial. For example, a study from Brenda Davy’s research group reported that participants who drank a 500ml glass of water before meals lost more weight over three months than those who didn't.

Tips for Maintaining Hydration at Work

By adopting some practical strategies, maintaining adequate hydration can be relatively straightforward. Here are some tips to help stay hydrated during the workday:

  1. Start the day with water: Begin your day by drinking a glass of water to rehydrate after a night’s sleep. This sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.
  2. Incorporate water-rich foods: Eat fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as cucumbers, oranges, strawberries, and watermelon. These can contribute to overall hydration.
  3. Limit dehydrating beverages: Be mindful of beverages that can contribute to dehydration, such as caffeinated drinks and alcohol. Balance these with additional water intake.
  4. Listen to your body: Pay attention to signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth, dark urine, fatigue, and headaches. Respond promptly by drinking water.

Hydration is a critical component of cognitive function and productivity. Even mild dehydration can lead to significant cognitive impairments, affecting concentration, memory, and mood. By prioritising hydration and implementing practical strategies to maintain adequate water intake, we can enhance our cognitive performance and overall productivity at work.
