Technology has always made one big promise: life will be easier. And to be fair, it often delivers. It is both simultaneously heralded as the ultimate enabler of human potential and indicted as a cause of cognitive degradation, psychological distress, and productivity loss.
Technology both helps and hinders performance.
Wearable technology (biometric feedback)
The advent of wearable technology and biometric feedback mechanisms has fundamentally revolutionised the pursuit of personal wellness, athletic training, and performance optimisation. Devices capable of continuously monitoring sleep architecture, blood oxygen saturation, caloric expenditure, and cardiac rhythms have democratised access to clinical-grade physiological data. At the absolute forefront of this "Quantified Self" movement is the measurement and modulation of Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a metric that has successfully transitioned from esoteric cardiovascular research into the mainstream consumer health and fitness market.
In simple terms, higher levels of HRV, indicates that you’re in a good place physiologically speaking. Conversely, depressed HRV is a recognised biomarker for chronic physiological stress and systemic fatigue. HRV serves as a non-invasive, highly sensitive proxy for the autonomic nervous system (ANS), reflecting the continuous, dynamic interplay between the sympathetic ("fight or flight") and parasympathetic ("rest and digest") branches. Of course, having the feedback is one thing, but if you don’t do anything about it, what is the point of collecting it? In the same way having a ‘Smart meter’ in your house telling you how much energy you are using and when is of no value if you don’t use those insights to better manage energy consumption.
A recent analysis comprising the largest dataset ever studied in the HRV biofeedback field, encompassing 1.8 million user sessions collected via mobile apps, demonstrated that HRV biofeedback can reliably guide individuals into an optimised state known as "physiological coherence". This is when there is a profound synchronisation between brain rhythms, respiratory rates, and cardiac cycles, it can be achieved by engaging in something as simple as paced, deliberate breathing. When you do this (breathing at approximately 6 breaths a minute) heart rhythm patterns shift almost instantaneously from erratic, disordered states into this highly ordered coherent rhythm. The consequence of that is to put you into a much better state.
The technology, in this context, acts as a perfect enabler: it visualises the invisible, empowering the user to develop heightened interoceptive awareness and conscious control over their autonomic stress responses.2
But!
Wearable technology can result in something known as algorithmic dependency, wherein people begin to prioritise the diagnostic, generalised output of their devices over their own own sense of well being. A comprehensive, three-month exploratory analysis measuring daily self-reported wellness against overnight resting HRV metrics produced startling inconsistencies. The study hypothesised that negative emotional, mental, and physical states would inherently correlate with low HRV measurements. However, the data proved otherwise. Subjective feelings of stress and nervousness demonstrated absolutely no statistically significant association with overnight HRV. Even more counterintuitively, self-reported feelings of being "energised" actually exhibited a negative association with HRV directly contradicting the fact that high HRV universally equates to being in a better state. Why is this? It’s because the measures of HRV used are somewhat crude. They rely on generalised population algorithms. These algorithms cannot fully account for the complex, highly individualised spectrum of perceptual, cognitive, and affective states that fluctuate depending on the context in which one finds oneself.
The problem of using generalised data is that you might awaken one day feeling subjectively energised and prepared for a demanding day ahead, but your wearable device delivers a severely depressed readiness score. As a consequence, you might abandon your planned workout, or approach an important presentation with heightened anxiety, anticipating a poor performance, based purely on the digital suggestion. This dynamic creates a powerful "nocebo effect," where the technology actively undermines the user's inherent capability, transforming an intended enabler into a self-fulfilling prophecy of limitation.

The relentless, gamified pursuit of optimised metrics can transition wellness from a restorative, health-promoting practice into a source of stress. Global survey data regarding digital consumer trends shows that the nature of what users are tracking has shifted ominously. The focus is moving away from holistic health monitoring (such as deep sleep cycles and resting heart health) toward rigid, competitive performance indicators like speed, distance, and granular caloric expenditure. The goal of wellness is to develop a sustainable, intuitive, and healthy relationship with one's own physical form, but the shift in focus of the metrics used has replaced wellness with the stress of trying to satisfy external digital benchmarks.
Thieves of time
The proliferation of hyper-connectivity is arguably the most pervasive and impactful double-edged sword of the modern era. While it undeniably enables unprecedented global network building, democratised access to information, and rapid knowledge transfer, it is fundamentally engineered upon the ‘attention economy’. The attention economy is designed to capture, fragment, and monetise human attention. One of the consequences of this attention economy is a proven decrease in both personal productivity and baseline mental health.
Popcorn Brain
Extensive academic research into the impact of social media news feeds on personal productivity reveals a starkly negative correlation across almost all demographics. Meta-analyses encompassing global educational and corporate data indicate that social network addiction correlates negatively with achievement. Heavier social media use aligns directly with diminished performance outcomes. Why is social media so destructive? Human attentional limits dictate that focusing on a complex, high-value task requires the full engagement of working memory. In contrast, social media platforms, characterised by infinite scrolling mechanisms, push notifications, and algorithmically curated news feeds, promote a state of constant interruption. This environment fosters a neurological adaptation sometimes colloquially referred to as "Popcorn Brain", a condition wherein the neural circuitry becomes habituated to rapid-fire, high-dopamine digital inputs. Consequently, the brain's capacity to sustain attention on slower, less stimulating deep-work tasks is severely compromised.
Digital exposure fundamentally undermines the ability to concentrate. There are significant negative associations between screen time, social media usage, and sustained attention spans. Engaging with multiple digital streams simultaneously does not increase throughput; rather, it exponentially increases working memory load, exacerbates feelings of cognitive fatigue, and ultimately delays the return to full concentration after each interruption.
Digital FOMO
Social media acts as an unparalleled engine for social comparison, leading to elevated rates of clinical anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). It’s a paradox. While people rely heavily on social media to consume news and maintain friendships, social media platforms have the impact on many of helping them feel profoundly lonely and inadequate. The trouble is that the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) creates a compulsive, addictive need to remain connected, which in turn can lead to emotional dysregulation, increased impulsivity, and sleep fragmentation.
Systematic reviews highlight that adolescents and young adults spending more than three hours per day on these platforms are significantly more likely to experience these mental health issues, with meta-analyses confirming strong relationships between social media addiction, insomnia, and generalised depressive symptoms.
More and more people are setting time limits on apps or removing them altogether to claw back some control over their life. After all, you can’t save time but only spend it. It’s a lot more fun doing the activity yourself than watching others do it and wishing you were.
